How the calculator works

  • Look back: every month the savings amount is invested in precious metal at the month's average price. Today's value is your holding in grams at the current price.
  • Fees: if enabled, the purchase fee (gold 1%, silver and platinum 2%) is deducted from every instalment and the storage fee (gold and platinum 0.5%, silver 1% per year) monthly from the holding.
  • Inflation: adjusted for inflation, the calculator shows all amounts in today's purchasing power – for the look back with the German consumer price index, for the forecast with an assumed 2% per year.
  • Taxes are not included. In Germany, gains from physical gold and silver are tax-free after a holding period of one year.

Where do the forecast scenarios come from?

We analysed every 10-year period since 1996 and calculated the yearly performance in euros. “Cautious” is the weaker quarter of these periods, “Medium” the median and “Optimistic” the stronger quarter. This results in these yearly returns:

Frequently asked questions about the calculator

How accurate is the look back?

The calculator uses monthly average prices. A real savings plan buys on a specific day, so the result may differ slightly. Today's value uses the current price.

Are the forecasts guaranteed?

No. The scenarios show what would happen if prices developed as in typical periods of the past. The future can turn out better or worse.

Why does platinum perform weaker?

Platinum is used heavily in industry, especially in car catalytic converters. Its price therefore moves with the economy and has developed more weakly than gold and silver since 1996.

What is the minimum savings amount at Spargold?

A savings plan is possible from €5 per execution, weekly or monthly, in gold, silver or platinum.
